Healthcare Practitioner Education Changes Perceptions of Success
Healthcare Practitioners upgrade their psychological service.
Sophie, owner of Wimborne Wellness Centre, reached out to us to provide her team of chiropractors, sports therapists, and massage therapists with education on the psychological impact of injury. WWC treats a range of patients, from athletes to individuals recovering from everyday injuries, and Sophie recognised that understanding the psychological aspects of injury could improve their approach to patient care. Her goal was to help her team better support patients in their rehabilitation journey, particularly in terms of adherence and overall recovery.
We delivered a comprehensive seminar to the WWC team, focusing on how psychological factors can influence recovery from injury. Our session included:
Understanding the Psychological Impact of Injury: We discussed how factors such as identity, age, and previous experiences shape a patient's psychological response to injury. For example, athletes may struggle with the loss of identity, while older individuals might experience heightened fear of not fully recovering.
The Role of Beliefs and Perceptions: We explained how patients’ beliefs about their injury and recovery can significantly impact their rehabilitation adherence. Negative perceptions, such as fear of re-injury or doubts about recovery, can delay progress, while positive beliefs can enhance motivation and commitment to treatment.
Solutions for Improving Rehabilitation Adherence: We provided actionable strategies to help WWC’s practitioners encourage their patients to stick with their rehabilitation plans. These included setting realistic recovery goals, creating a supportive and motivating environment, and educating patients on the psychological benefits of persistence.
Evidence-Based Techniques for Patient Care: To wrap up, we equipped the team with tangible, research-backed techniques they could use to facilitate both the physical and psychological aspects of recovery. These tools were designed to help patients cope with the emotional challenges of injury and foster a proactive mindset during the rehabilitation process.
The seminar provided WWC’s team with a deeper understanding of the psychological factors that influence injury recovery, leading to improved patient care. Key outcomes include:
Enhanced Patient Support: The team now feels more equipped to address not only the physical but also the psychological aspects of injury, resulting in more holistic treatment plans.
Increased Patient Adherence to Rehabilitation: By applying the strategies discussed, WWC has seen improvements in patients’ commitment to their rehabilitation programs, which has positively impacted recovery times and outcomes.
Professional Growth for the WWC Team: The seminar also contributed to the professional development of the team, giving them new skills and insights that enhance their day-to-day interactions with patients.
Here's what owner Sophie said:
"Dan came along to my work and did a seminar for us on our team day. It was not only an amazing workshop and super useful for us as a team working with patients, but also for myself personally with my sports! Dan is not only welcoming and friendly but also very informative and professional. He helps bridge the gap between the worry you may have behind sport performance into actually just consistently performing well. I can't wait to work with him more! Thank you Dan." – Sophie, Owner of Wimborne Wellness Centre
Sophie and her team at Wimborne Wellness Centre have greatly benefited from understanding the psychological elements of injury and how they affect recovery. By integrating these insights into their practice, WWC is now better equipped to support patients through both the physical and mental challenges of rehabilitation, ultimately fostering a more successful recovery process. This case demonstrates the importance of addressing psychological factors in healthcare settings to enhance patient outcomes.
